Portfolio > Teetering on the Brink (2010)

Rotunda Gallery, Clark County Government Center
(Las Vegas, NV ) 2010

"Art is supposed to make you think, not adjust your equilibrium- unless it does both, like the sculpture of John Bissonette currently on display at Government Center. The artists visual inspiration came from a desk left out near a dumpster. Exposure had worn it down to a shadow of it's former self.

It got Bissonette thinking about the illusion of durability, one of the minor deceptions that fueled the recent boom and left our valley covered in stucco encrusted clapboard. The artist exposes the cracks in our foundation; he doesn't plaster over them. In Bissonette's world, wall sconces hide leaks and throw rugs cover cracks. Ornament is a camouflage, and permanence an illusion. Its heavy stuff to contemplate but definitely timely"
